Meet Doug & Debbie
Burkham:
The Red Star Ranch Story:
Doug and Deborah Burkham's Red Star
Ranch, is located in northeast Texas, in the tiny community of Tira. We purchased the secluded property, which was once part of a large dairy operation, in 2004, and decided it would be the perfect place for a future home and for raising longhorns.
Doug, who is not new to the longhorn industry, raised Texas Longhorns in the 1990's. As is apt to happen at times, the longhorn business had to be set aside until a later time. By the time Doug and I married in 1998, I too had developed an appreciation of the longhorn breed. Even though we were not active members of the TLBAA, we would occasionally attend sales and events with Doug's parents and fellow longhorn breeders, Zane and Nancy Burkham.
In August, 2005 we bought our first Texas Longhorn cow. Since then, our progress has been slow but steady. We have put in many hours of physical labor clearing land until we finished our fencing project. Our bodies have been bruised, banged, scratched and sunburned, but it is truly a labor of love.
Our 2005 calves are from cows that were purchased already bred or were bred to Zane's beautiful, mostly black bull, Whelming Image. For 2006, since we had such great success with Whelming Image, we will use him as the service sire for the cows that were not previously bred to him. For the cows that have already given us a Whelming Image calf, we are using Lamb's Power Play as our service sire. Lamb's Power Play is a massive Phenomenon son whose tip-to-tip horn measurement is 67 inches. We are very excited about the upcoming season, and we are already formulating a plan for 2007. By the way, Lamb's Power Play semen is available if you would like to incorporate some of that awesome Phenomenon genetics in your breeding program. For inquiries or questions, give us a call or send us an email.
We offer our many thanks to those that have shared their knowledge with us, as well as given their time and effort to help us in this grand venture. We offer a special thanks to Zane Burkham for giving our cows a home and a service sire until we can finish our fencing project in Tira.
We acknowledge that we are very blessed, and that it is only through God's grace and goodness that we get to raise these magnificent animals. We hope to be good stewards of the land and longhorns that he has placed in our care.
We hope that you will visit our website often. If you see something that catches your interest, please call or email us.
